Young Females Are More Vulnerable To Harm In Car Accidents

Transportation agencies and safety advocates often study several factors and collect statistics related car accidents. The goal is to understand more about collisions from the standpoint of crash prevention.

For example, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is currently looking at how age and gender affect victims of car crashes. According to the NHTSA’s recent study, young female motorists from ages 21 to 30 have a 25.9 percent higher risk of passing away in a car accident than men in the same age group. Moreover, female passengers in this age group have a 29.2 percent higher risk of passing away in a car collision than their male equivalents.

While the safety agency is aiming to uncover more about the recent findings, NHTSA suggests that the difference in size and strength between men and women in this particular age bracket is very different. Because men are much larger and stronger than women of this age, they are more likely to survive car accidents.

However, there are differences among other age groups. The study indicates that at age 35, men’s security starts to dwindle. Moreover, by 70, men and women share an equal risk of dying in a collision. There is short span of time – ages 65 to 74 – where female motorists have a 1.4 percent lower fatality risk than men that from the same age group. Over all, the fatality risk tends to grow by approximately 3 percent each year after the age of 21.

Ultimately, these numbers help researchers understand more about car accident prevention. Moreover, the results can potentially be used to help car manufacturers develop safer cars in the future – for men and women of varied ages. For example, due to seat belt use and airbags, fatalities have gone down 42 percent from 1995 to 2002, according to the NHTSA.

While no one wants to be a victim of a serious car accident, responsible motorists can only do so much to protect themselves from reckless or inattentive drivers.
